Aw Snap!
Well, Jessica lost just a little bit of her innocence today. She's been watching "That's so Raven" on Disney Channel a lot. About two weeks ago Jess was asking something to James, I forget what... but her goal was really just to delay bedtime for a few extra minutes. Whatever her question... when she heard James' response she said "Aw Snap!" James and I giggled to each other and let it go. We knew she'd heard Raven say it and kind of thought it was cute. Today, she comes to me and is telling me that Raven didn't get a job because she is black and that lady doesn't hire black girls but Chelsea got the job because she looks bright like me and my sissy. OMG! My daughter is 4 yrs old and she learned about racism for the first time today on the Disney Channel. I had to go sit with her and talk about it because she was very upset. I guess I was nieve to think she could escape having to learn about this at sometime, I did hope that if she did it would be a long time from now. I started by asking her if she knew what the difference was between white and black people. She said "No." I told her there are some differences like skin color and hair but we are all people, God made us and loves us all. That means that we need to love people no matter if they are black or white just like god does. I also told her that some people still haven't learned that they should love everyone like god does and because of that, they treat some other people badly but we have to make sure we don't act like that. She is 4. I wasn't prepared to have this kind of talk today... Hope I didn't scar her for life...

Sounds like you handled that pretty good to me. Man, you would think that the Disney channel would watch things a little closer than that. But, I have seen some pretty scary stuff come out of the Disney people since Walt Disney passed away. It is not so inocent anymore.

Mom
Well, in the episode, Raven told her Dad what happened and he went down and talked to the ladies boss and she got fired for discriminating, so they did show that what the lady did was wrong and did have consequences. It still seemed like a deep subject to have on the Disney Channel. Not all kids will go straight to mom to talk about something they don't understand like Jessica does.
I suppose that it is a lesson that needs to be learned. I am glad that she was mature enough to understand on her own that it was wrong and wanted to discuss it with adults. I am very proud of her.
